Note: Previous to July 1, 2000, this rank was known as "Överste av första graden" . The new rank brings Sweden into line with international useage. In the Navy the corresponding rank is called "Flottiljgeneral".
Army Underofficer and Enlisted Ranks
Non-commissioned officers are commissioned officers in the Swedish armed forces. India has long had a similar system with its Junior Commissioned Officers, but it would appear Sweden is phasing out Underofficers. It has eliminated the top Underofficer rank (see below) and has made no new appointments since 1992 in the next rank, Fanjunkare. Presumably there are few, if any, appointees to this rank still serving.

Swedish Artillery and Anti-Aircraft Command has variations of the army ranks:
Prior to 1972 Sweden had, as its top Underofficer rank, the rank of Forvaltare. This equated to the British Warrant Officer Class 1 and to the US Sergeant Major.
