Below is a list of the reserved blocks for squadron numbers. Becausea number was reserved did not mean it was used. Squadrons were still being formed after VE Day because the war with Japan continued, with no sign of when it might end. Only the initial equipment is given: many squadrons were reequipped.  The bulk of the squadrons were formed in North America and shipped out on auxiliary aviation transports, which were about the size of escort carriers.

1700-1749 Torpedo-bomber/reconnaissance (Sea Otter)
1750-1769 Single-seat fighter   (Firefly)
1770-1799 Two-seat night fighter (Helldiver, Hellcat, Corsair)
1800-1809 Unallocated
1810-1829 Dive-bomber
1830-1899 Single-seat fighter
