Operation Enduring Freedom: Naval Orbat June 7, 2002

Coalition Naval Forces in the Indian Ocean - 7th June 2002

The Gulf of Aden and surrounding areas receives some of the heaviest patrolling from Spanish, Dutch, German, French, British and American vessels. The focus is on maritime interception: observing, interrogating, and if necessary boarding suspicious vessels. They are assisted by coalition maritime surveillance aircraft stationed in the Gulf, Djibouti and Kenya.

It should be noted that a number of these ships (the Australian Task Force for example) have spent or will spend time patrolling the Persian Gulf as part of the Maritime Interception Force (MIF) operating in the Persian Gulf against smugglers carrying Iraqi oil in contravention of UN sanctions.

Some of the navies on this list also contribute vessels to the complementary ALLIED ENDEAVOUR conducted by NATO’s STANAVFORMED in the eastern Mediterranean. The Dutch for example have contributed vessels to patrols in the Caribbean, freeing up US Navy and Coast Guard assets there.
